SDSU Aztec Stadium

SDSU Aztec Stadium holds a capacity of 35,000 with flexibility to expand. Plans to work with partners in the tourism industry will open the space to large scale events including championships, festivals and concerts.

Schuff played a major role in mitigating risk on both the limited budget and schedule for this project.

We identified and developed allowances for portions of the project that were in the conceptual design phase when steel was brought on board and advised where design was going to grow to mitigate costs. Items that had significant design growth included the scoreboards, shroud and the precast support.

Project Overview

Through design and BIM coordination including weekly calls to identify missing design details or conflicts, Schuff was able to provide shop attached precast supports while the precast was concurrently being designed resulting in reduced field work and significant schedule savings.

To further reduce costs we were able to support the design by utilizing international sub-fabricators to lower high labor cost items. Unfortunately, COVID-19 impacted international shipping timelines. We stayed in constant contact with our project management team to advise on impacts to late steel and incorporated overtime additional crews and cranes. We managed to maintain the original schedule durations while absorbing 4 weeks of delays from steel.

Schuff Steel’s design assist / value engineering approach on this project established a solid partnership with Clark Construction with another project already in the pipeline.
