Project Overview
This OSHPD 3-certified facility integrates with the existing campus through two elevated bridges and a ground-level extension of the public concourse. A key design inspiration was the natural movement of water from the nearby San Gabriel Mountains; the north face is entirely glass, showcasing unobstructed mountain views, while anodized chevron panels along the east and west facades shift color throughout the day. Interior program spaces are carefully arranged to reduce patient travel distances, support multidisciplinary care, and deliver a tranquil healing environment.
Schuff Steel’s Contributions:
- Steel Fabrication & Erection: Delivered and installed 2,700 tons of structural steel across a constrained, active medical campus.
- Design Assist: Collaborated closely with the design team to support efficient detailing and sequencing, ensuring the structure could meet stringent OSHPD 3 requirements.
- Welded SidePlate System: Implemented a seismic-resilient SidePlate moment frame system throughout the MOB tower and connecting bridges.
- Architectural Precision: Executed several tapered architectural columns to meet aesthetic goals while maintaining structural performance.
Hope Plaza represents a major step in City of Hope’s strategic plan to transform cancer care—bringing together beauty, innovation, and technical excellence in one of California’s premier medical campuses.
