Project Description

The Cosmopolitan Resort & Casino

The Cosmopolitan Resort & Casino is a 6.4 million square foot megaresort on the Las Vegas strip. Schuff Steel fabricated and erected over 50,000 tons of structural steel, including a 4 level below grade steel parking structure; 150,000 square feet of convention/meeting space and a 70,000 square foot casino.

Schuff Services: preconstruction, design assist, structural engineering, BIM services, project management, steel detailing, steel fabrication, steel erection

During the early stages of the project, Schuff Steel was enlisted to provide preconstruction services that included ongoing and continuous cost, design and constructability analysis throughout the design development.

With a demanding schedule and budget challenges, our team employed innovative value engineering techniques to reduce the costs and time associated with materials and manpower.

Concrete filled steel plate box columns were utilized in lieu of 4” inch thick plated W14 X 730 members, saving more than 9,000 tons of material and related fabrication hours. Additional schedule savings were also realized as the longer lead-times of receiving W14 X 730 members from overseas was eliminated.

Further, the 4” inch thick plates and heavy flanges of the W14 X 730 prescribed columns were substituted with 2 ½” inch plate “built-up box columns”, saving approximately $12 million dollars from the project’s cost.

With the 6.4 million square foot resort situated on a small 8.5 acre site, steel erection presented its own set of challenges. In order to maintain an efficient schedule, Schuff Steel worked closely with the engineer of record during the project design phase to ensure access issues were addressed early on.

Due to the close proximity of the adjoining structures (restricted areas), and speed of erection, dual steel plate cavity shear walls were utilized to solve the access issue, as well as strength and stiffness concerns for this large-scale project. This gravity and seismic system also afforded the project both cost and schedule savings by eliminating all formwork associated with a cast-in-place (CIP) conventional shear wall. Steel plate cavity shear walls were delivered from Schuff Steel fabrication facilities fully assembled (with rebar installed) and erected as assemblies, ready for concrete-fill. The dual steel plate cavity shear walls were delivered in 10’ foot wide by 20’ foot and 30’ foot high sections.

The Cosmopolitan Resort & Casino was completed in 2010 and offers a unique and luxurious experience for its patrons.
